Data extraction and large data sets

Rhiannon Markless has worked on a wide range of editing and cataloguing projects for The National Archives. In particular she has been involved with cataloguing records from the courts of Chancery and Star Chamber and catalogued the High Court of Admiralty Spanish Succession material from the original documents, and the Austrian Succession/7 Years’ War.

Her thesis ‘Gender, Crime and Discretion in Yorkshire, 1735-1775’, involved a survey of quarter session and assize court records found to be extant in the TNA ASSI and KB series and local record offices in Yorkshire, from which she created a comprehensive database of criminal court records for the periods surveyed.

As an independent researcher Rhiannon has undertaken numerous data collection projects on behalf of academic staff at universities in England, Australia and the USA, extracting data from the records of the civil and criminal courts held at The National Archives and other repositories.
